Full Focus Photography

In my spare time, and thanks largely to a mix of skills developed in the games industry and product visualisation, I work for a company called Full Focus Photography retouching some of her shoots. Retouching [not to be confused with touching up] is a mix of illustration, imagination and spatial awareness.

It requires no small degree of creativity and an undertstadning of the dynamic realtionships with objects to space, light and reflection. It also involves a lot of cheating! I enjoy this work, for both the challenge and the reward. Here are two images from a recent shoot, having already be retouched.

Bayer : Internal CGi movie

The creativeness of Bayer knows no bounds with this CGi viral movie. The overarching premise is boost to crops, represented by a Supertanker in a field and a periscope popping up!

Usually with a movie of this complexity even at 60 seconds, it would take several people including individual concept and storyboard artists, a shader, environment modeller, character modeller, animator, and lighting artist over a month to do and cost the same price as an Audi TT, however having set up an internal department at PH-WT to handle specific CGi briefs, we we're able to develiver with a shorter timescale and at a favourable cost to the client.

Suffice to say with any creative brief, particularly invovling CGi it was both a pleasure and a pain. Along the way I learned a not insubstantial amount about movie colour correction, editing and After Effects barrage of plugins and filters.

Project : Spridget

Spurred on by my love for the reinvention of iconic classics and fond memories of my fist car, I wanted to challenge my skills with a complete design brief. The challenge is to remake the MG Midget for today. This is no small challenge and required initial concept visuals, taking the most iconic features of the older vehicle, building them into a recognisble but modern take on the design.

From concept sketches, through to plan drawings and finally a fully realised CGi vehicle, the project has been ticking along in my spare time now for over a month. Below are some early renders. I will add more materials [such as sketches, plans and final renders] in the following weeks.

Anyone with the financial backing and nerve to build a prototype please get in touch :)

I'm going to be launching a site dedicted to getting this car prototyped, with the challenge of making it electric! I will be contacting various manufacturers for help with sponsiorship and engineering as well as opening the project up to the puiblic, in order to shake more interest into alternative power and prove to the larger manufacturers that there is a healthy demand for clean fuels, stay tuned to www.spridget.co.uk in the coming weeks.

Mercedes Truck of the Decade

This was quite a nice brief from Mercedes to celebrate the acolade for Truck of the Decade?! The initial discussions ranged from a fully CGi rendered truck driving into shot and bowing to the crowd, down to a flash animation based on the existing visuals. The former being very expensive and latter a fare bit cheaper, guess which one they went for.

Satisfying though that it mage front billing not only on the Merc Truck website, but also on the main Mercedes website.

This campaign based around the environmental and cost saving for Mitsubishi trucks, saw me implement a real time physics simulation to achieve the coins falling into an imaginary box. Mental Ray and Arch/Design materials were used to render out a realistic gold material. The artifacts that you see on the final movie are from flash compression.

Mercedes Axor X

It's always a challenge on several levels to work with existing photography. In this case I had to design the arrangement of the logo as a large texture in Photoshop, then create a trailer from scratch in 3d Studio Max to match the Truck. I then had to camera match the existing shot of the cab and composite it together for an A2 poster. The end result worked out quite well despite the hair pulling throughout the whole process.

This was a difficult but rewarding project, where it had to be produced almost overnight. A top tip is not to work 16 hours straight on a project, several days at a time, especially if you have to converse politely with other human beings!

Brief:
Produce a portfolio website in flash, that feels fresh and encourages engagement. The site also has to tie closely into the newly designed CI.
